Ash K Holm Celebrity Makeup Artist Skin Tips

How do you recommend clients prep their skin for makeup?

Facials! Facials are important, because beautiful skin makes the makeup. When skin is hydrated and clear, makeup glides on the skin. I encourage my clients to get facials and to take care of their skin at home. The Rose Gold Radiance Mask is one of my favorites, because it lifts and tightens. It’s also great to use a pre-makeup application!

What’s a makeup trick that you use on your clients that anyone could emulate?

I love a winged liner. When it’s done correctly, it really opens the eyes. After applying a liquid liner, I use an angled brush from MAC with makeup remover to perfect the wing. The result is super clean, sharp and flawless.

What’s your go-to tip when doing makeup?

HD cameras can be unforgiving and unfortunately every fine line and imperfection can stand out. I use a lifting eye serum to lock in moisture to prevent those makeup creases from seeping into the skin. The SuperLift eye serum is my go-to, because of its tightening ingredients.

What does skin preparation for makeup look like?

It depends on the client. Some women are able to take great care of their skin, but during awards season, it can be difficult to carve out the time. I incorporate skincare very much into my makeup routine. Creating a canvas for the makeup is of utmost importance!

Is there a specific product you like to use to prep your clients skin for makeup?

I love skincare and I’m very passionate about it. So, yes! I do a lot of lip prep. Flash Facial by Sonya Dakar is great for the lips because it exfoliates them without having to use an actual scrub. Without the proper skincare the makeup looks different and it doesn’t last as long. I’m known for a signature complexion. I don’t like skin that looks overly made up. I prefer a lush, hydrated and alive look. Women who like what I do like that it looks vibrant and radiant vs. flat and overdone.

Celebrity Makeup Artist Carly Fisher Shares Her Pro Skin Tips:

Use the Sonya Dakar Clean Canvas to remove any lipstick or eye makeup remover. In just a few simple swipes the oil will seamlessly wipe away any unwanted makeup without pulling or tugging the skin.

Mix it up! Your blush can double as eyeshadow and your lipstick as a cream blush. As long as it’s neatly and evenly applied, there’s no rule that says you can’t switch it up!

Flash Facial is great for removing dead skin that can really interfere with the makeup application process. Flash Facial helps makeup glide onto the skin and also gets rid of those unattractive dry patches that are unforgiving (especially on the red carpet!)

Use the Sonya Dakar Organic Omega Oil to highlight the high points of the face. The cheekbones, bridge of the nose and eyebrow bones look gorgeous and glowy with a small touch of the oil.

When using skincare products like Sonya Dakar’s that are oil-based, use a cream blush and cream foundation to avoid breaking up any powder on the face.
